What is a Virtual Webmaster
What is a webmaster and why it is an important position for any company with a website? Here is a link to the Wikipedia definition of Webmaster.
A Webmaster is a person responsible for the operation and maintenance of a website. As many businesses are now only on-line, this role is often handle by the original site designer. Webmaster is a word created because of the Internet and did not exist 20 years ago, but is now in common use. The word is created from Web, meaning the Internet Web and Master to mean a craftsman or specialist.
Within a large organisation the role is often spread over a number of different people and departments. There is the IT department which must make sure the site is always live and operates in the way it was designed to work. Normally the email setup and firewalls and security are all integrated to protect the company and staff from spam and malicious software. by the same department. There is the Marketing Department who want to maximise the reach of the website on and off line, and may well need continued support. A Content Management System or CMS is normally the preferred solution for approved staff to make changes and updates.
A virtual Webmaster operates outside the company, often from an office many miles from the customer. This situation is not normally used by large organisations, but can be highly beneficial to the smaller company. Typically the smaller company, unless it is directly involved in creating websites, or offering Search Engine Optimisation ( SEO ) services, either does not know, or lacks the time and resources to enhance and promote a web address ( url ).
Nowadays a growing number of people use the Internet to stay in contact with friends and colleagues (Facebook, Twitter etc. ) and to locate products and services using one of the search engines. i.e. Google, Bing etc. When a search is made, you need to take every possible step to ensure your website is listed in the top ten positions for relevant Keywords. There are many companies that specialise in this highly competitive area and can claim many successes at a price.
Small Budget Company
If you are a small company and not the original website designer, with a very limited budget, you either do it yourself when you have time, not recommended as there is never enough time, or use the services of a Virtual Webmaster. Hired by the hour or for a specific function the results can be cost effective and beneficial. Only Google and Bing know how they rate or page rank a website, so you need to think longer term and build up relationships with other companies.
